A year or two before officially starting Word Outreach International in 2001, I took my first trip to Austria. While there, I visited with some missionary friends and spoke to a youth group. Since then, God has provided opportunities for me to serve in many places around the world – 22 countries up to this point!
From the start, my simple description for Word Outreach has been ‘Preaching the Gospel and Encouraging Christians Around the Globe.’ It’s what I enjoy doing and it’s something that I believe God has placed in my heart to do.
God has opened doors for me to speak in churches, schools, youth camps, and small groups. He has given me friendships with missionaries around the world, allowing me to be inspired by their stories and enthusiasm. And He has also helped me in the area of sharing my faith, personally -with friends and strangers. While serving Him, He has been growing me – for which I am grateful!
In 2014, God has allowed me to begin serving in a new way with the Word Outreach Podcast.
Below, you can learn more about the road to ministry that God has taken me on. As Christians, it’s great to look back over our lives and see God’s involvement. We all have a story to tell, and here’s mine.
The early years…
I was born in 1970 and led to the Lord by my parents when I was 6. Raised in a Christ-centered home, I was fortunate to be exposed at an early age to foreign missions, since our family often traveled outside the country on mission trips. God used these years to plant in my heart, a seed of desire to be involved in ministry for a lifetime. I call it a ‘seed’ because, over the years, it grew.
The critical years…
Following in my dad’s footsteps, I began learning to fly airplanes at the age of 16. During my final year of high school and the early college years, the desire to study God’s Word intensified. Serving in a summer ministry at a Christian white-water rafting camp helped me to begin thinking about starting a group Bible study on my college campus the next fall. I did start that Bible study, and after it began our small group grew to over 100 students. The desire to serve God by encouraging others in their Christian walk was growing stronger in my heart. A decision for the ministry was on the horizon.
The responding years…
It was during my second year of college at Liberty University, while attending a chapel service, that I responded to God’s nudging in my heart to spend my life preaching and teaching the Word of God. Immediately, I began thinking about Christians outside the boarders of the U.S. But how could I ever have the funds to travel regularly, from country to country, to encourage believers? Soon after, God revealed how one day those piloting skills would be used in a traveling ministry of evangelism and encouragement around the globe. The dream seemed impossible, but with a new sense of enthusiasm the ministry training continued, one Bible class and one flight hour at a time.
The training years…
While Bible training began in Virginia, it continued farther south at Tennessee Temple University, where I graduated with a double major in Biblical Studies and Pulpit Communications. Following graduation, God continued to open doors for me to accelerate in my flight training and grow in ministry experience. These open doors served as confirmations that encouraged me to keep my sights on the goals that God had given me.
Recognizing My Future Life Mate!
Today, it’s the title of a talk I bring to Singles Groups. But years before I would give the message, God was introducing me to the concept. And I’m so glad that He did! After salvation, it’s the next most important decision I would ever make. Allowing Him to pick out my marriage partner has been a key to enjoying fulfillment and intimacy in marriage!
These exciting years…
Today, years of Bible and flight training have come together to provide a unique opportunity for me to travel throughout the world, encouraging others in the Word. As an ordained evangelist, I also pilot Boeing 757 and 767 aircrafts. Through this avenue, God uses my job to provide for my family and ministry to others. It’s similar to the tent making ministry of the apostle Paul in the fact that God used his skills for his job to provide for his physical needs, which enabled him to travel and encourage others (Acts 18:1-4; [20:34]; 1 Corinthians [9:18]).
However, the ministry is more than preaching and teaching. As a family, my wife, kids and I encourage missionaries around the world – sometimes by traveling to see them and sometimes by hosting them in our home. It has been exciting to see God make a way for the ministry of Word Outreach International!
